For example, if I buy a 4GB flash drive or a 500GB external drive, why is it that in Properties, they actually say like 3.76 GB or 455 GB respectively?

its as simple as 1024 kb =1 mb windows counts in dis manner. so its deduct capacity whic is mention in physical storage device , its count as 1000kb =1 mb.okk

On my MacBook Pro, you can make different desktops by swiping up with 4 fingers. At the top, it shows different “desktops.” What is the point of having multiple desktops? What does it do?

You run different applications on each desktop, then swipe between them. They are usually organised by task.
For example, you might have a web browser open to research something along with a Pages document you are writing based on the research on one desktop, and then have your email client and calendar open on another.

I just bought Microsoft Office from my campus computer store at a student price, so it only comes with the CD-ROM. But my laptop doesn’t have an optical drive, and I don’t have time to buy an external optical drive. How do I transfer Microsoft Office from the CD to my laptop?

Get someone to copy the office disc to a flash drive, copy it to your desktop and run it from there.
